Picture this. A five year old you- (yes YOU) -are walking down the street with your mother whistling your favorite tune. All of a sudden a girl about your age comes up to you and asks you to play a game. You accept the invitation eagerly and skip off with your new-found friend.
Innocent, right?
Well, then your mother starts to ask you were you are going. You reply impatiently. Your friend really wants to go to the park, and hey, who are you to question someone who's main obligation is fun? (Even if you don't know what the word "obligation" means.) Your mom laughs and shrugs it off as imagination and tells you that you can play with your "friend" at home.


*3 years later*

Picture this. You're eight and your best friend just died. You haven't played with your imaginary friends in awhile. Of course, they don't know that you still do. You're too embarrassed to tell anyone, though. I mean who in the second grade plays with their imaginary friends? Not the cool kids!
So anyway, all the adults are saying somethin' about Zoe "passing on" whatever, but you pay no attention. You could tell the whole class that she tooted, but they all seem to know. They completely ignore her and only you talk or look at her. She comes to you crying at recess and you set with her at the swings.
She tells you that not even her parents will talk to her anymore. You start to get mad and declare that you will put a stop to it. But you can't really do anything, but shout, "LOOK AT ZOE YOU IDIOTS!"
Suddenly---

Suddenly, you're in the principal's office with a old and fat secretary telling you how sad your "situation" is. That it's "like a children's soap". So, you get curious and, when your mother comes in to pick you up, ask, "Is children's soap berry flavored? I smell like berries."
You're mother doesn't pay attention, though. She's apologizing to the principal about something and you are trying to catch the words, but she talking so fast, and then Zoe appears and starts wailing and you start to ask her about soap and then the secretary comes in with a box of tissues and her nose is all puffy and your mom is still apologizing and Zoe's still screaming and the secretary asks you if you need someone to talk to and you...Well, you faint.

You just walked out. You were sitting in your room doing 16-year-old stuff, when Zoe appears. So you walk out.

Out and up and away. You're tired of dealing with people staring at you staring at Zoe. She follows you around day and night, but you can't get rid of her.

When you were 8 and fainted, she was the person in your face screaming your name as soon as you woke up, while your mom just glared across the hospital room.

Your mom stopped talking to you, but you had Zoe. It didn't matter that everyone stared at you during school. You had Zoe.

It didn't matter that you sat by yourself during lunch because you had Zoe.

It didn't matter that your dad left soon after you started seeing her. It didn't matter that your mom started to abuse you. it didn't matter that you cried every night. It didn't matter that you had no money to leave and go to college.

You had Zoe.

Right?

Wrong.

Zoe grew up with you. You grew up with Zoe.

But Zoe was cutting off everyone important to you.

At least that was how I felt all my life.

But it's not like you would feel any differently, right?
Wrong.
You probably would've been smart enough to ignore her while you could.

Like I finally decided to do that night.

That night when I turned 16, I decided to fake it.
