The Wolf's Charm: Jacob and Bella

" Who are you going to choose, Bella? " I heard the leech ask. Blech, filthy bloodsucker.
She stood in the middle of the huge circular meadow we had seearched for, for weeks. She was beautiful, he pale skin turning a light soft peach as she blew up in his face.
" You left me! And if you really loved me, you wouldn't make me choose! "
She had made her decision.
" Bella, " his eyes seemed to darken, he had been beaten, by a "pup."
My eyes caught the shine of her bracelet I had given her as a graduation present, the hand carved wolf seemed to grin, in agreement with me. I saw her eyes catch my view as she tore off the crystal heart and tossed it on the ground.
" I have made my decision. " ~Dramatic pause~ " And its not you, Edward. "

My heart almost came out of my chest when she walked over to me. She was finally in my arms and there was nothing he could do about it.
He looked down at the charm before picking it up between his forefingerand his thumb, with a small twist it snapped sending crystal sharder to catch the light on the meadow floor.
" Goodbye, Bella. " There was a gust of wind, but when I looked up, he was gone.
She put her face in the crook of my neck and sighed contentfully, no sign of indication that she missed him. As her hands slipped around my waist I couldn't help, but smirk. It was about time.

" Bella, " I breathed. She felt so warm to me and the smell of strawberry shampoo filled my nose. It was maddening. Its not like this was the first time I thought about her sexually, but now that I had a chance...
" Jake. " She smiled. Relieved of the stress that held the name, Cullen.
" I'm here, Bells. "
" How long? " She pulled away enough to look at me. Her eyes pleading. " I don't want you to leave me. " I saw tears threatening the corners of her eyes.
" I'm never leaving you, Bella. I'll stay with you as long as you want me. I have time. "
" What if I want you to stay, forever? "
That took me less than a second to process. I had imagined this conversation many times before in dreams. My dream was coming true.
" I'm yours. " This was a perfect moment to kiss her. But I didn't want to pressure her into anything.
" Kiss me, " She whispered. It was like she was reading my mind. And I didn't mind her prodding my head like that bloodsucker.
I tilted her chin up and looked into her eyes. I didn't make it a bruising kiss, like I had the first time. The day she had broken her hand when she punched me. I gently let my lips brush hers. Her reaction caught me off guard. She was the one wanting more.
" Kiss back, Jake. "
That sounded familiar in a reversed sort of way.
I did, and I felt my fingers knotting in her hair. Ahh Bells.

I held her there until she pulled away.
" I'm out on my own now. " She whispered. I looked around and thought about this for a minute.
" And? " I was completely confused, that's what.
She looked at me expectantly. " I want to live with you. "
That took me off guard. I had no idea what I was expecting, but that wasn't it.
" Bella, " She cut me off.
" Jake, don't you want me? " I couldn't take it when she cried or used the puppy dog eyes.
" Bella, I didn't mean it that way, its just that, this is a big step. "
" I know, but I'm willing to take it as long as you are by my side. "
I looked into her eyes. They say that the eye was the doorway to the soul, and I could now see why. Bella was such a tiny little thing. Fragile. She only did good, she was innocent. So much pain behind those chocolate brown eyes.
" But I have been staying with Sam, " This was the truth, but I couldn't take her to my house. My dad, Billy, would definetly get suspicious of that and I really didn't feel like having Charlie on my back. Sure, Charlie loved me, but I'm not so sure he was in love with the idea of me and his daughter living together.
" I can get my own place, I have some savings. "
" Bella I can't let you pay for this alone. But Emily is moving in with Sam, maybe we could stay at her place. You like it there, don't you? "
" Yeah, " I saw her face brighten immediately at Emily's name. " I love Em. "
" I'll ask her about it when I go ever to help her move her stuff later. "
" Oh, " She started to pull away. " Am I making you late? "
I gave a short laugh. " No, Bella. "
She looked at me in confusion. " No? " It took me to realize that my statement could have a double meaning. No, she wasn't making me late or No, I don't want you to pull away. I was gunning for both.

She was really naive if she thought I was going to leave her that easily.
" Jake I... " She couldn't finish watever she was going to say. He fingers clinching on the sides of my shirt. Yes, for once I was wearing a shirt. I didn't want the bloodsucker to take a look at my abs and get jealous. Or worse, drool. Did vamps drool? Now I was thinking about it. Wait, of course they did, right before they bit into the young girl like a ripe tomato.
" Bells, you don't have to say anything. "
" Its not that. Its just... I need you Jake. "
" I'm not going anywhere. "
" I didn't mean it that way. " She whispered. She couldn't be talking about IT could she? I had to change the subject, I didn't want her to know I had thought about it too.
" You told me I was like your personal sun. " I offered.
" Jake, please. " She was begging me? This didn't sound like Bella. But at the same time, I didn't want to stop her. But I had to, I told myself. I couldn't just take her virginity just like that.
" Bella, are saying, you want... " I felt a knot forming in my stomach. This was also another dream I had, had.
" Yes, " She breathed. Her lips on my neck. What was she going to do?

When I felt her lips at my neck I immediatly thought of them. The Cullens. But Bella was human. No mistake in that. Her rosy cheeks and her clean blood. Yes, even werewolves could smell blood. Though it all smelled relatively the same for humans, vampires had their own smell. It wasn't a good thing to have in my nose either. It burned like hell and felt like someone was pouring bleach down my throat. But humans were kind of nice, having their own distinct smell mixed with their blood. Bella smelled kind of floral, somehow this was possible. Werewolves on the other hand smelled kind of woodsy, it made sense if you think about it.
" Jake, please. " He moved her head along my jawline. It felt really nice, but I was only concerned about Bella. I wanted the timing to be right, and I didn't want her to make love to me out of guilt. Or anger whichever emotion she was doing a damn well good job at hiding.
" Bella, I--" Her lips were pressed to mine, one hand was pressed on the back of my head, holding me there. She was still human so it didn't hurt me, though I could tell she was straining to keep me there. Her other hand was grabbing greedily at the skin of my waist.
I guess that was the moment I found out I was a kinky guy. I liked to be scratched and bitten. Ironic, isn't it? Being bitten by the girl of my dreams, who was formerly engaged to a vampire. I didn't think about my involvment in the arrangement. The one where Bella broke off the engagement because of me. But Cullen deserved it, he shouldn't have done that. Despite Bella's pleas, he was always going to be Cullen to me, if that. I didn't care. There was no way I was going to call him, Edward.
" Jake, don't you want me? " Her touches and kisses became more intense and harder for me to handle. I was caught in the middle of two groups. The first one being the guys that were madly in love with the girl, the girl being a forbidden fruit. The other was the group of guys that gave into the pleas of that girl out of submission. If I was going to submit, I wanted it to be body and soul, not just body. I wanted it to be perfect. I was a virgin, so what? I'm sixteen. I had time, and I wanted it to be special to Bella, too. I wasn't the type of guy to knock a girl up, -if it ever came down to that-, and just leave her. I wouldn't do that; I couldn't do that. I couldn't be like Quil's dad.
There was a rumor we weren't aware of, until Leah pointed it out, that Quil's mom had, had an affair with someone in the Quileute tribe. I had never had the nerve to ask Billy.
" Of course I do Bella, how could you ask me that? "
" Because you aren't making love to me. " She looked up at me wwith those beautiful eyes, her gaze holding me. " I want you to, Jake. More than anything. "

" Bella, its not that. I just want the moment and the timing to be right. " There, I had said it. I was a complete moron. What kind of guy turns down sex for time?
She nodded and seemed to brighten. " I understand that, I wasn't thinking. Its hard when I have something so tempting. " She trailed her fingers up my arm and slowly across my chest. I felt my lips part and my breath increase. I had to shake this off or something was going to happen.
I looked down at her charm bracelet and saw the charm. My charm. And then I looked over to the spot where he stood and saw remains of crystal shattered in the grass. It sparkled in its ruins, somehow still shining for Bella. Just like his skin, I thought.
" Bella, lets go to the beach. "
" I haven't been in such a long time. "
" That's why you should come see it. And maybe Quil will be out with Claire. He likes taking her to the beach. "
" Aww that is too cute to pass up. "
I helped her to her feet. It was a long way from here down to La Push, but the time would be worth it, just to spend it with Bella.

I wrapped my arms around her as we walked, like a couple to the rabbit which was parked at the edge of the trees. I had it because I had to drive Bella. I was at her house anyway and Cullen called and told us to meet him out here. So we had to walk the five miles back down to the main road that led up here.
" Jake, do you ever wonder about the future? "
I snorted. " I guess. Why? "
" Just wondering. I wonder sometimes. "
" About what? "
" What will happen. "
It got quiet after that. Romeo said, sad hours seem long. Long miles through the woods seemed long.

I froze. After Cullen left Bella had gone into a deep depression. If you could call it that. I called it the Zombie State. Night of the Living Dead. My so called Undeath. I had to stop watching horror films.
When she bought two pieces of scrap metal that were now our prized bikes, she had come to me for help. Me! Of course she was just using me, she admitted that much. But then we became inseparable. Hang out everyday that she wasn't working and even homework. After four months and Bella decided to add cliff diving to her ' To do List ' the little one, Alice, had came back. The stupid vamps thought she was going to commit suicide. How can someone so loving of life, want to give it up?

I shrugged off the feeling of remembrance. Bella was really quiet. I would have thought she was asleep if we werern't walking. Finally, we made it.
" Jake you'll really take me to First Beach? "
" Of course I will besides, you were coming over tongiht anyway for the cookout that Charlie mentioned. You do remember, right? "
" I forgot for the moment, but yeah. "
" Do you want to go home and make anything? "
" I was going to make something.... not sure what. "
" You don't have to its just that Emily always makes stuff. "
" I know, and she's a really good cook so who is all coming? "
I had to use my fingers for a minute. " Embry, Quil, Emily, Sam, Paul, Seth, Leah, Sue, Kim, Jared and the rest of them. " I said with a laugh.
Nothing to kick off summer like a bash with the wolves.

Bella and I drove in silence and I was okay with that. It gave me time to go over the day's events. I kept replaying the part in my head where she gave up Cullen for me. What kind of girl did that, besides the best one in the world? He could have given her everything. All I could give her was protection and love. Hehe, protection. Okay, I was hangin' out with Embry too long, all his inuendos. But it was worth it to have my best friend back. My brother.
Yet, the fate of the pack rested on my shoulders. Now that I was no longer part of Sam's pack, but still friends with everyone. I was the alpha as Leah and Seth put it. For once they agreed on one thing, and that thing annoyed the hell out of me.
At the beach, we could have more freedom. Not that the meadow was populated or anything, but it was his place, and it felt wrong. Not to mention it reeked. The beach was one of our places. Come to think of it, Bella and I had a lot of places we could call our own.
The drift wood tree on the beach.
My garage.
Her house.
Emily's house. La Push was a second home for Bella, just like Forks was becoming one for me. I would be hanging out there a lot more now. I had even hung out with her and her friends once. Not the time we went to the movies with the Newton kid and he blew chunks, but we went out for pizza. It was nice, not being awkward in public. I liked Angela and Ben was pretty cool.
I passed over the border that once held the line between us and the Cullens. The treaty was broken a long time ago, back when we decided to work together the one thing we both loved. Bella.
All of that was damned now.

La Push was small, but it was home. Everything was along the road, just like in Forks. I parked and went around the passenger side to open the door for Bella. She smiled and stood up and took my waist.
" There's something about the sea air. "
I gulped. This time we could actually be a couple and people would know, not just guess.
I put my arm around her and we started walking along the shore to our driftwood. It was our spot and we always came here when we went to the beach. This tree marked a lot of events. Even from the first time I met Bella when she first came to Forks. We had walked down the beach and I had told her some ghost stories which I now knew were true. That originally broke the treaty. When she found out what he was. And eventually what I had become. It had been so much simpler when we were both human.

She wat down on the branch, I sat under her on the ground. She pulled me back so I rested my head on her lap. She stroked my hair. It was kind of long now.
" Your hair is so soft, Jake. "
" Am I your dog now? " I chuckled.
" Something like that. "


My mother used to brush my hair when I was little. You think mama's boy, but I didn't know her as well as my sisters. When she died a great sorrow fell over my house, covering it in a thick filmy layer of pain and suffering. It hurt my dad a lot. He drank more than he usually did when he hung out with Charlie. I never admitted that to anyone. I never admitted the fact that I heard him crying in the middle of the might those first six months.
" I couldn't save you! " He would cry out.
I had never seen my dad that way and it killed me. I may have been a kid, but when your dad breaks down and admits defeat, you never forget. Fathers were supposed to be strong and burly. My dad cried like a baby.
My sisters cried too, but they were girls and they knew mom a few years before I was born. Being raised by a man, changed you a lot.


I could relate to Bella in a lot of ways, but she could never feel that pain or know the truth of what my fate bound me to.

I threw a rock in the surf, it skipped quite a distance. When Bella tried it, it landed in the sand, right in front of the water. I burst out laughing and she tried to storm away before I caught her arms.
I lifted her easily over my shoulder and we spun laughing for sever minutes, people passing by and smiling.
The tidal pools were pretty, the little perfect worlds frozen in time until the tide ruined it and moved the families out to sea.
Sort of like our world. Something came through and ruined it.

The surf was rough, despite the sunshine. It was a high of seventy-two in La Push. Not that it mattered to me, I ran on a toasty one-oh-eight these days. So no one seemed surprised when I took my shirt off in the middle of the beach. A lot of people looked at the muscle on me, a few girls couldn't look away and I caught a few looks from their boyfriends. I smirked.
" What? "Bella asked giggling.
" Humans are easy to read. "
She laughed a little. I was relieved, I thought she would have thought to her vampire, but apparently not.
" This is true. " She smiled. " Are you a good reader, Jake? "
I snorted. " The best. I can read you, easily. "
" And do you find me an interesting read? "
" The best. I can't put you down. "
We dies in a fit of laughter. Sure, it was corny, but I had just had her on my shoulders a while ago so I wasn't exactly fictional. She grabbed her ribs, gasping for air as she tried to stop laughing, but found it unsuccessful. I thought about this, did she really find me funny. I had been the class clown in the school, but this funny? She was the only person that mattered to me. All I wanted was to make her happy. I would kill for her to smile. She smiled at me all the time, no matter what I had done. If I could give her a star for every smile she had given me, she would own the Milkey Way.

Bella and my relationship made me think of a poem. Emily had written it for me. She was an artist.

I loved that poem. Sure it was cheesy in some parts, but she wrote poetry for me all the time. She knew Bella meant a lot to me and she tried to lighten the mood. Another came to mind.

Our love is forbidden because she might find out
I took you from her, without a doubt
I promised I would stay as long as you want

" What are you thinking about? " Bella asked, breaking my temporary moment of dominating a Cullen. Not that I hadn't, but that was written before this happened.
" Poetry. " I answered honestly.
" Poetry? You write? "
" No, Emily wrote some for me when I was depressed and I was just thinking about it. "
" I would like to see, I knew she had an artistic side, but I wasn't sure what she did with it. "
" It makes her happy and its rather good. Its not Whitman or anything, but you know, we don't all have that talent. "
She nodded. " I have never been able to wrote poetry, stories and essays, yes. "
" You write? " I mocked her enthusiasm. She stuck her tongue out at me.
" Yeah, not as much as I used to. "
" Do you want to show me sometime? "
" If you want, its not the best, but it was a way to pass some time when I didn't want to face reality. "
I nodded, " That makes sense. " We had started walking again. Some people were in the water, I wondered if it felt good at all, sure it was warm, but the water had to still be cold.
" You want to go to my house? " I asked. " Or we could go to yours, you could make something for tonight if you want. "
" Lets go to my house, I'll feel really bad if I don't make something. What is everyone bringing? " I looked at her questioningly.
" I don't want to bring the same thing. "
Boy, I was a dummy. " Ummm Billy has spaghetti, Charlie might bring a pizza, Emily a chocloate cake, and I think the rest of the pack is bringing chips. "
" I'll make tacos or something. "
I hadn't expected that. " Why tacos? "
" Its different and I want to have variety. " She smiled and started jogging. " Catch me if you can. "

I took after her, laughing. " Bella. " She threw her arms up in the air ans started spinning. Something I had never seen her do. She was always too clumsy. But this time she didn't fall. I caught her and sealed her mouth with my own. She ran her fingers in my hair.
" Nice, Jake. " She smiled.
I saw Sam walking down the beach towards me. My smile disappearing from my face. His face was grave.
" Sam. " I nodded. He didn't seem surprised that Bella was with me. Word travels fast around La Push.
" Jacob, can I have a word? "
I nodded. " I'll be right back, Bells. " I followed Sam a ways down the beach before he stopped.
" Are you with Bella Swan, now? "
" Yes, I am. Why? "
" Did you do anything to Edward Cullen? "
" No, he left after Bella told him she didn't want to be with him anymore. "
He sighed. " Edward Cullen is dead. "

My breath caught. " How can he be dead? He's a friggin' rock! "
" His head was gone. "

If he didn't kill himself and the other Cullens didn't help him, who was the killer on the loose?
" Sam, you can't tell Bella. We can't have her freaking out about a possible attack. "
He nodded. " Don't tell Emily. "
" But Sam, she's your soulmate, you'll tell her anyway. "
" Only if she asks. Why would she have reason? "
" Won't word get around that a Cullen is dead? "

My walk back to Bella seemed to take ten minutes, it took one.
" Is everything okay? " She asked me, looking up with her innocent eyes.
" Perfect. " I grinned. In a way it was perfect, no more Cullen to steal her away with his money and whatever else had caught her attention when she had fallen in love with him.
I put my arm around her as we slowly walked up the beacht to the parking lot. It was nice that we could look like a couple and finally say we were. It was nice to say that Bella was finally mine. It wasn't that I was an overprotective freak, but I had waited, just like I said I would and I had proven to her that I was the one who loved her more. I had proven that to her that night in my room after the fight with the newborn vampires. She knew it too, yet she went back to him leaving me waiting. The thing is Cullen is still waiting for her, even from his grave.

I grabbed Bella's waist, making her laugh as I took the wheel. I drove past my house and went straight for Forks.
" Do you need to pick up anything? "
" No, I have the peppers and stuff at home. "
" Taco shells? "
" Have 'em. "
I smiled. Good, more alone time. When we pulled onto her street I saw one of their cars in front of her house. I saw a figure standing against it as well.
" What's going on? " She asked.
" I have no idea. " The answer was strained.
The big one, Emmett Cullen stood in the middle of the street forcing us to stop. His eyes, grave.
He walked around the passenger side and knocked on the window. I rolled it down.
" Hi Emmett. " Bella smiled.
" You're happy? How can you be happy? "
" Why wouldn't I be happy? " She looked confused. I held my breath hoping he wasn't going to tell her.
" You broke his heart, Bella. "
I scoffed. " His heart. "
He ignored me. " And now, you can't even apologize to him. "
" What are you talking about? "
" How can you apologize to Edward when he's dead? "

I watched Bella stare out the windsheild, nothing. No tears, no voice.
" You didn't know did you? " Emmett backed off.
Bella shook her head and still no tears.
" Did you know? " He pointed to me.
"No. " I said in a hard voice.

When he left and I got Bella inside she went straight to the kitchen.
" Bella, are you okay? "
She looked up from putting the peppers on the counter and smiled. " Why wouldn't I be okay? "
" Because... "
" Because he's dead? "
" Well, yeah. " I said quietly.
" I may have loved him, but that's over. It's in the past. I have to get over it. "
I stared at her in shock. She had broken down last fall when he left her, now he wasn't coming back. I hoped she wasn't pretending just for me. That psychic vampire, the tiny one, Alice, would be useful right now.
" Jake, are you okay? "
" Yeah, why? "
" You seem to be expecting something to happen. " She began to cut up the peppers.
" Well how you reacted last fall when he left... " I trailed off and she sighed.
" I was in love with him then, Jake. I'm not in love with him now. "

I stood over Bella as she prepared everything.
" You know I don't like that, Jake. "
" So? " I said a little cockily.
" It makes me nervous, what if I cut myself? "
" Then you'll be emo. "
" Don't hate on the emos!"

" So it would cut itself. "

I would occasionally taste everything before she put it all together. It was great, even the salsa she made for nachos. We were going for the whole Mexican theme if you couldn't guess.
I was nervous at first, what if it got awkward and they blamed me or Bella for his death? But then I remembered, they all hated the Cullens. Except for Seth, but he had to know that we didn't kill Edward and he didn't kill himself. Something or someone was out there that was able to kill vampires and I was going to find out what it was.

I carried the container with the taco stuff in it. She hadn't prepared them in case people fixed them a certain way. I also had the bag of chips and salsa on top of that. It wasn't heavy at all.
" Right. I'll remember that. " She laughed.
I put the stuff in the back seat and opened the passenger door for her.
" Jake, why are you so nice? "
" What do you mean? " I slid into the driver side.
" You knew about Edward, didn't you? "
I swallowed. " What makes you say that? "
" What else would Sam want to talk about? "
" I don't know... "
" So you knew? "
I nodded and put the key in the ignition.
" What's wrong, Jake? " She looked at me. I ignored her and pulled out onto the street. I turned and headed for La Push.
" I'm waiting for you to react. "
" React to what? "
" To his death. "
" React how? "
" A break down or something. " I muttered and drove through town.
" Why would I do that? "
" Remember last fall? " I said it a little louder than I wanted. She jumped back at my tone.
She put her head in her lap. " Shut up! I don't want to talk about this. Just drive. "
" Whatever. " I rolled my eyes and drove the rest of the way in silence.
