Behind the Masks

It all begins at a masquerade. Your hair is combed, your clothes are new, the mask fits snugly upon your face. Yes, you're practically stunning and clearly the best looking one at this ball. Except everyone else is thinking the same thing about themselves, all well.

The music begins to play, a cheerful tune with a touch of morbidity and it really gets you in the mood to dance. So now you're looking around for a dance partner, mentally hoping that whomever you get won't step on those new shoes. They did cost a pretty penny after all. Searching and searching, still nothing-- That is, until you notice the three dashing looking men in the corner. Or at least you think they're handsome, the masks they wear makes it hard to tell.

The shortest of the three stands in the middle, grinning and already swaying to the beat. His personality practically shining through and he makes you smile. Yes, maybe he's the one you want to dance with. He seems like a lot of fun, he might even tell a funny joke and keep you entertained tonight. Which is what you want, to have a great time and he’s the most likely one to provide it.

Your eyes glance over to the right, this one is taller than the other. By an inch, maybe two. He doesn't look too interested in the guests that are already dancing, so there’s a chance he will not want to dance anyway. Still, he strikes you as someone that is personable. Not too intimidating, but you probably don't want to be around someone that's quiet. Not at a party anyway-- Maybe for a first date...

You start walking over to them, that's right. The one you want to be with is the guy you first noticed. But as you walk, you realize that you're getting this creepy feeling. Like someone has been watching you the entire time. This realization makes you stop and even subtly glance around the room. Only, no one that you can see is even bothering to pay you any attention, so you keep walking to those three guys.

And that's when it hits you, three guys. You didn't even give that last one a look and when your eyes turn to him. Your heart instantly begins to pound against your chest, harder and faster as you gasp silently. This one has been looking at you. Watching you carefully, intently and a bit unsettling. Why is he staring? An embarrassed blush brightens those cheeks and you've already forgotten the reason for walking over.

He seems aloof, mysterious and far more dangerous than the other two. Like he was dragged to the masquerade, forced to look handsome and somehow dance a few songs... You can't help but like him already. It must be that alluring aura he keeps dishing out. Or perhaps it's the way his stormy eyes are staring at you. He smirks and you feel like an idiot for staring with your mouth open. What was it about this guy that snagged you like a fish on a hook? Then again, do you really want to know.. Nah, probably not. Which is why you keep walking, only you’re not staring at the tallest anymore. You’re back to looking at the guy that doesn’t scare you as much. The one you liked from the first moment.

He grins at you, and again you blush but not because you’re being coy but on account of the tallest still looking at you. The shortest bows and calls himself, Travis. He ends up leading you by the hand to the dance floor and again you can’t help but think how odd that is. No other guy has ever treated you so formally before and while it’s refreshing you
wonder what that other guy would’ve done.
