Feral Hearts

I was born in a world of canines, felines, and prey. I was indeed a feline, a lioness in fact. My parents were killed when I was a cub so I never really knew them well. I knew that my mother died because of protecting me from a bull we were hunting, and my father died of a sickness. I was left with another cub named Vinny, my pride was in charge of watching over me. Vinny became my best friend and my bodyguard when we grew up.
I sat at the front of my den, thinking by watching the sunset go down, the sky looking like a pink amber colored fire. I turned, Vinny was still partially awake.
"Vinny, you're the only lion I can trust to keep a secret from the pride." I said. It had been years since my parents died, so I was now called a 'teenager'. "I'm going to run away from home."
"What! Why?" Vinny asked out loud.
"Shhh! Not so loud, Vin!" I hushed.
"Your parents would've wanted you to continue to lead this pride! Those were the orders your father gave before he died!" Vinny whispered.
"I don't care! I just want to be normal!" I replied. Vinny and I stared at each other, the moment of silence had begun.
"How badly do you want to be a 'normal' lioness?" Vinny asked.
"More than I want a mate..." I answered. Vinny thought for a moment, sighed, then held his head up high.
"Who will be leader when we're gone?" Vinny smirked. I was surprised.
"You're coming with me?" I gasped in amazement.

"Indeed I am." Vinny smiled. I was still in astonishment.
"Well, I'm not sure who I'm going to make in charge, we'll need someone big, strong, and leader material." I thought for a few moments. I looked at my pride, there was practically just lioness, the only males I saw were cubs.
"Why don't you make one of the lioness leader until the oldest cub grows up?" Vinny suggested. I nodded in agreement. I talked to a lioness named Nischa to take over until her son was old enough to take care of the pride. Of course, confused at first, she agreed anyway.
Me and Viinny left when we were sure that the whole pride was asleep. Thoughts were going through my head to go back, but I ignored them. Sand flew up from behind us as we continued to run.
"My brother has a pride we can live in, we should go there." Vinny said when we were more than miles away from the pride.
"Good enough." I spoke.
Vinny stopped on a rocky hill and roared. I was glad there was an answer. We continued towards the roar. Pride, new home, new life, possibly new name.
