| Prologue Death. It’s a funny thing, you know. You’d expect it to be quiet and peaceful. I mean, you’ve made through life, now’s time for a break, right? Wrong. My name is Anna and I’m dead.
Chapter One I guess the end is a good place to start as any. It was mid-September and I was on my way home from Preston’s house. Preston was my current boyfriend, nothing serious, of course. Hell, I was already cheating on him with Mandi’s boyfriend. Whatever, back to that September night. Well, I was walking back from Preston’s house and not driving because I was feeling bloated, and it never hurt anyone to exercise, right? So, I made it to the corner of Lee and Hazlehurst, when I hear a car coming up behind me. I turn around to see a black Jaguar; in the driver’s seat was Hayden. Hayden had always hated me, because she considered herself my competition, please. Or, maybe because I screwed her boyfriend in year ten, oh well. In the passenger’s seat was her right hand *edit your post and this will go away*, Cassie. Hayden rolled down her window, “Hey, Anna, darling. Done at little Preston’s house already? Headed over to Jordan’s house now, right?” she said, grinning. “Sluuty litle Anna.” Cassie slurred, tipping back her bottle. I flipped Hayden off and kept walking. I heard her tires rolling forward, so I turned around. “You can’t take a hint can you? I guess that would explain why you’re still trying to win Daddy over, though he obviously likes Marci better.” I said, knowing she wouldn’t be able to take it when I brought up her stepsister. Cassie hiccupped as Hayden screeched, “It’s about time you learned who you’re messing with, *edit your post and this will go away*!” she said, pulling out her LG. “Oh, no! Don’t tell me you’re calling Mummy and Daddy! I’m so scared.” I said, sarcasm dripping from my voice. Hayden laughed, “Ha ha, you think you’re so smart, Anna. Well, not this time.” She said, as I heard tires screeching from around the corner. A red Viper pulled into view followed by a yellow Mustang. The windows on the Viper were tinted so I couldn’t see who was driving. The driver of the yellow Mustang was Kyle. Kyle was Hayden’s twin brother, star of the lacrosse team, and had a history of being a badass. Kyle stepped out of the car, flicking his cigarette to the ground. “Anna, Anna, Anna.” Kyle whispered, shaking his blonde, shaggy hair out of his face. “I didn’t want to have to come here tonight, Hayden.” He said, looking at me. I couldn’t help it, I burst into laughter, “What is this? You got you’re brother to come talk some Mafia-Godfather *edit your post and this will go away* to me? God, and I thought Cassie was stupid.” I heard the crunch of gravel as Hayden opened her pink, pouty lips to speak. She swiveled her gaze around me as I turned around to see my best friend, Emmalie getting out of the passenger’s seat of the Viper. I smiled and turned to Hayden, “See, Hayden? You still won’t win.” She laughed and pointed to Emmalie. I turned as Emmalie said, “God, Anna, you just don’t get it do you? I’m tired of being your *edit your post and this will go away*, hiding in your shadow and taking the blame.” She yelled. I raised an eyebrow and said, “Alright, then. So, who’s the driver of the Viper? Let’s get this party started.” Emmalie stuck her head back in the car, and said something to the driver. The door of the driver’s side opened, and Alexander stepped out. I gasped, “Alejandro?” Alexander was my childhood best friend, whom I fell in love with, the he left. He laughed, “Anna, you haven’t changed a bit. But, I have. I’m not your Alejandro anymore.” I heard Hayden giggle, “Not the reunion you were expecting, I’m guessing.” She said, tauntingly. I closed my eyes and released the breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding. “I guess it’s not. So, can you just get it, whatever ‘it’ is, over with? I need to get home, Aubrey will be wondering where I’m at.” I said, remembering the promise I made to help my sister with her Geometry. Kyle chuckled, “Oh, you won’t be going home tonight, Anna.” I quickly looked at Alex; he winked and gestured with his eyes. I knew what it meant; when we were young we had our own language with our eyes. He’d said savior. He was trying to help me? |
