| Damien is a Blue Fledgling. Next to Stevie Rae, Damien is Zoey's closest friend. He has a knack for using big words (the twins don't understand), is kind and caring and excels academically. He is openly--and proudly--gay. He has been going out with Jack Twist who has an affinity for "Modern Technology." Damien himself has an affinity for air. He isn't the same as every other homosexual in the House of Night. He is more on the guy's side than on the girls and is most of the time the one who speaks for the group when he is aware that they are thinking the same thing. | |

| Don't read the spoiler if you haven't read all the books yet. - Spoiler:
I just have to say that I love Damien. He's such a wonderful character and has been so loyal throughout the series; he's definitely my favorite so far. I loved him together with Jack, and I have to say I'm extremely happy that there is not just straight people in this series (as that would not be very realistic). I was incredibly sad when Jack died, but I think that Damien handled it all pretty well in Destined (if my memory serves right). Anyways, because I loved Jack and Damien together I'm a bit sad to hear that Damien might get a new boyfriend in Hidden. (Read the last part) I do want him to be happy though, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see if I like this new character (assuming that it's not someone we've already met).

I hope they don't make it like he falls head over heals and has no trouble finding someone knew. They should make it a little more real.

Totally. I'm hoping that it will be just the start of a relationship in this one, like getting to know each other and maybe realizing that they do have some feelings for each other. Diving into a new relationship and completely forgetting about Jack would be very unrealistic, not just because of his character but in general. He's very heartbroken right now so it wouldn't be realistic if he just very suddenly forgot about it and got over him.

Agreed. Enough with cheesy Disney love (though I love it too) and more realisticality (is that even a word?) Anygay, Damien is hands down my favorite character. I had a little trouble with coming out to my parents and thinking of Damien helped a lot spitting it out. (My parents took it well, btw.) Damien is so sweet, I wish I had a friend like him - or that I was like him at least a little bit.

| I personally think he is pretty cliche. He is kind, intellectual, interested in clothes and musicals. That is pretty stereotypical gay. And sadly he is often reduced to being just gay rather than a gay character. To be fair I did look at him rather annoyed from the beginning, because he is potrayed as a non-girly gay character, while clearly being a very feminine gay guy. There is nothing wrong with being a feminine gay guy(or a feminine straight guy, for that matter), but the book talks far to many times like he is the most manly gay imaginable. And honestly that kinda kills it for me.
And Jack and Damian were a such a shallow couple. They were both gay so the female characters assumed they would end up dating and they did. The only bonding between them we got was that they talk about both liking Harry Potter. One thing if that was a polarizing book or a secret tipp only hardcore readers knew, but Harry Potter was the most mainstream book of the time.
It doesn't work like that with gay people! They are just as diverse as heterosexuell people. Being sexually compatible does not mean you're automatically compatiblle in personality and/or interests. I do understand how difficult it is to introduce a new love interest for a character(especially with a sexual orientation out of the norm) without making it obvious, but keep in mind how little time a single novel usually adresses. Damian and Jack go from strangers to the steady couple without ups and downs in less than a week. | |

| I can't claim to be all familiar with the topic and yet I was also bothered by the inconstancy of Damien's character. I never gave much thought to his relationship with Jack, because it never interested and I think you hit the nail on why it didn't. Other gay character introduced, BOOM, gay relationship. Since the first few books were told from Zoey's perspective I could accept that there were some behind-the-scenes moments but it is the rushed nature of it that makes it unbelievable. | |
