Chapter Two: Say What?
The guy who had run in wore nothing but shorts. He had an eight pack and his arms were just gorgeous. His brown hair was messed up by the wind, and he had a cute boyish smile on his face and his green eyes were twinkling. Realizing I was staring at him like a complete fool I turned my gaze down at the pizza and brushed some of my hair out of my face.
“Wow, this was embarrassing. Thanks for telling me you had female guests,” the guy said and I glanced up to see him watching me. I looked around at the table and saw Zach smirking. He stood up and banged fists with the guy.
“Hey man. Let’s go get you a shirt,” Zach said started walking out of the room.
“I’ll be back” the guy said and did a graceful bow before following Zach.
I took another bite of my pizza and chewed slowly, looking around at the others. I saw Emily giving her plate a small smile and blushing slightly. Oh no, she likes him…and here I was staring at him. Feeling stupid with myself I sipped my coke.
“Who was that young lad?” my mom asked with a smile.
Thank you mom! I thought.
“Oh that was Brent” Nick said and shook his head. “Seems to think he’s living here, hence why he sometimes doesn’t wear a shirt. It’s sad you didn’t catch him in his frog boxers” he chuckled.
“Nick, shut up” Emily said, smiling wider now.
“What? It would be fun to see his face” he smirked. “And you would blush or something.”
“I would not!” she said and glanced around at us, face flushing.
“Of course she wouldn’t. You guys always think we girls will blush, but that’s not the case,” I said, speaking up. I looked over at Emily, expecting to see her look at me with cold eyes as usual, so I was surprised to see her smiling gratefully at me. I smiled back and looked back at Nick. “Really, guys have a too big ego.”
“Is that so?” Brent said, walking into the kitchen again. Zach followed behind him and took his seat again.
“Yeah, that’s so. Someone should go and bring your ego down a notch,” I said as he pulled a chair out and turned it around, leaning his arms on the back of the chair. He was sitting beside Emily who was smiling down at her plate again.
“Maybe someone should go and bring your ego up a notch, because maybe it’s so that you have a too small ego. Hey, Em, can I have that?” he asked and nodded at the rest of her pizza. She nodded and pushed the plate over to him, who dived in.
“I’m with Brent on that one” Luke nodded and the other guys agreed.
“Well, I’m with Kate on this one” Emily said and my mom muttered her agreement.
“So this is a girl against boys thing? I guess we just won” Noel smirked.
“No you didn’t” I scoffed.
“Did too” he said and smiled.
“Did not,” I said. “We’re girls. Our vote counts as three votes each. Which means that we have twelve votes, while you guys,” I said and quickly counted them in my head. “Only have eight votes. I’m sorry.”
“Oh c’mon, we all know guys are better than girls. We get
five votes each” Brent said.
“Wait, wait, wait. I did not just hear that come out of your mouth young man” Sophie said loudly and sat up straight in her chair. “Men and women, girls and boys, are all
equal. No one is better than anyone else. This whole conversation is ridiculous, and I cannot believe that it’s being spoken under my roof. I expect you all to think through what we just said, and realize that it was all lies.” With that she gives all of us, even mom, dad and Jonathan, a stern glance. I start to feel really bad, since I was the one to start it all.
What a nice guest I am.“I’m very sorry Sophie, it was all my fault. While I’m speaking I would like to thank you for your gifts to us, they really weren’t necessary.”
“Oh don’t be silly dear” she beamed, in a great mood again. “It was my pleasure, no problem at all,” she said and I catched a weird note in her tone, but I couldn’t really place it. I frowned and then smiled at her.
“Thank you, it was just what I needed,” I said.
“I’m just happy to help. Now, Amanda, how long will you be staying here?”
“Oh, just a week. We don’t want to be a bother.”
“So short! No, stay a month at least. You’re not a bother at all! Quite the opposite actually.”
“A month?” my dad asked and frowned. “That is a very long time…with school and all, what about the children?” he said and looked at mom.
“Oh don’t be silly Fred! They can go to school here of course!”
“What about us? We can’t just sit here all day.”
“Oh but while me and John are at work you can take care of the house, go shopping or groceries, explore the town…you could do anything you want and there would be no problem for us at all.”
“Exactly, so why don’t we say…three months for a starter? Then if you enjoy it here we can make it longer” John said as he finished eating.
“Oh, I don’t know…” my dad said and looked over at Luke at me. I shook my head once, making it seem like I wanted to get my hair out of my face. I glanced over at Luke who was nodding encouraging. I glared at him slightly. Three months? We couldn’t stay here three months! I actually have a life back home, one I would like to return to.
“Okay, let’s say three months and see how it goes,” she says and the guys plus Luke cheers. I stared at her in disbelief. She did not just say what I think she said, did she? She couldn’t have, could she? No, this wasn’t true; it had to be a dream. Just a dream, pinch your arm Kate and you’ll wake up.
I closed my eyes tightly and pinch my arm hard, waiting to wake up.
I heard someone laugh and I opened one eye to see Zach watching my and laughing loudly. “What are you doing?” he chuckled. I dropped my arm and looked down, shrugging slightly. What was I going to say?
“Don’t worry dear, this will feel like home soon. You’ll get used to the guys and Emily…plus Brent” Sophie said and smiled at me. I looked up and met her eyes, which looked a bit mad.
I nodded and looked away.
What a jerk you are…great guest Kate, they must really enjoy having you here now. “Well, Sophie, I’m more than happy to stay” Luke grinned.
“I am very happy to hear that my dear” Sophie sad and smiled softly, looking at my mom and dad.
“I’m sure we will all have a great time here” mom said and smiled at everyone.
“Like a big family” John nodded.
“Great” I whispered and poked my pizza, no longer hungry.
“Did you say something Katelyn?”
“No, but please call me Kate” I said and smiled, hoping it didn’t look fake. I finished my coke and stood up. “Well, I’m going to your guestroom now if that’s okay.”
“Of course sweetie, but it’s your room now.”
“Yes, right…” I sighed and threw away the last of the pizza and put my plate and glass in the dishwasher. “Thanks for dinner.”
I looked back at everybody to see Emily staring down at her hands with wide eyes. She was as stunned as I was, she didn’t want me to stay. That made me feel a bit good and I left the room.
I walked up the stairs and frowned. Who had turned the lights off? Maybe Zach and Brent had when they went looking for a T-shirt. I blinked a couple of times trying to see better. I reached the top of the stairs but almost tripped on my own feet. I catched myself at the last second and took a deep breath.
I walked up to the room I was staying in, my, room, and opened the door. The lights were off here too but I could see the dark shape of a person pulling the drawers of my desk out and throwing my things on the floor. The person, obviously a guy because of the height, moved on to my closet and started throwing my clothes everywhere.
I froze, scared that the person might see me. He should have already, since I opened the door. Maybe he didn’t notice because the door didn’t make a sound and it was just as dark in the hall as it was in the room.
As quietly as possible I reached my hand out and tried to find the switch on the wall. I let out a breath when I found it and turned the switch. No light came on. I turned the switch again, still no light. I started to turn and turn the switch, forgetting that it was making a sound. The lights weren’t working at all. I heard footsteps coming towards me and looked up to see the guy moving closer to me. I stepped back to find the door closed. I glanced back at him to see that he was just behind me.
I did what most girls would do in my case – screamed. I screamed as loud as I could.
Suddenly the door was opened and the light’s flipped on, a hand covering my mouth.
“Jeez, Kate, I knew you were scared of the dark, but this is just wow” Luke chuckled.
I blinked a couple of times and looked around at the room. Everything was cleaned and nothing was lying on the floor. All the drawers and the closet were closed, and there was only Luke and I in the room.
Luke removed his hand from my mouth. “Me- I- There-“ I started.
Luke raised an eyebrow. “Mhm, go on please.”
“I really can’t stay here for three months. It’s the first day and I’m already going crazy” I said and rubbed my eyes.
“Well, I was going to say that we’re going to watch a move downstairs, so you can come if you want” he said and walked out of the room again. “You know where the living room is, right?”
“Yeah” I called after him and walked up to my desk. I pulled out the first drawer to find my notebooks and pen’s lying neat and organized like I had put them when I unpacked. “Kate, you’re really going crazy,” I whispered to myself, pulling the chair out and taking a seat.
I saw a note on the laptop with the password on. I took the note off and turned the laptop on. I logged in and changed password. I didn’t want anyone to log in on my computer and see what I have been doing.
Then I changed the background, because I really didn’t want to have all the boys plus Emily as my background picture, reminding me that I was going to stay here for three months or more. I found a really nice picture of a meadow, and decided to use it.
It didn’t work. It was still the same background of my ‘new big family’. I tried with many other pictures but none of them seemed to work. I groaned and gave up, opening the Internet instead.
Now, what was I going to do? I really didn’t feel like going to Facebook and be reminded who my real friends and family were, who I wasn’t going to meet for three months. But maybe I could fly home earlier? That was a great idea!
About one hour later I had found cheap tickets home. Problem was; I didn’t have any money right now. I was completely broke. Maybe dad could pay…but he probably was going to say that I wasn’t allowed to fly back on my own, since I was a little girl and such. But I was 16, not 8, so in my opinion I should be allowed to fly home on my own.
“Aw, Kate, planning on leaving us so soon?”
I jumped in surprise and turned around to see Noel standing behind me with his hands in his pockets. “How long have you been standing there?”
He tilted his head to one side and put on a thoughtful face. “About…half an hour or so, 45 minutes maybe. You really don’t notice much, do you?”
“You didn’t make any sound!” I said.
“Yes I did. I was breathing the whole time,” he said.
“You sure about that?”
“Yeah, very sure” he chuckled.
“Yeah, okay, whatever. What did you want?” I asked and turned the laptop off.
“Just wondering if you wanted to take a walk or something. Some of us are going to, the rest of us are cleaning up the living room.”
I frowned. “What happened in the living room?”
“Well, you know, we were watching a movie, so now there’s like popcorn everywhere and Brent spilled out his glass of coke.”
“Good job of him” I nodded.
“Yeah, but did you want to come? It’ll just be a short walk, nothing much really.
“Uhm, yeah, sure. Just let me change to something warmer” I nodded and stood up.
