Introduction-

Far, far away, in the small kingdom of Rosewalk, there lived a prince, a princess, and a murderer.......

Chapter 1-

I was running. I didn't know where I was and I didn't care. Something was chasing me. If it caught me I knew I would be no more.

As I ran things tugged at my skirts. I looked down to see what they were. Weeds. I was in the maze.

I used to play there as a child. As I started to recall the memory I turned a sharp corner. Dead end.

I heard rustling.

"Did you think you could get away that easy, My Love?"

I whipped around. There was no-one there.

Suddenly there were hands on my neck, squeezing the life out. Before I could react, or even scream, the world went dark.

I sat up in bed. The dream was too real. I had felt my life draining away.

I looked out the window. It overlooked the gardens.

I let out a sudden scream so loud it scared the ravens from the trees. As it echoed back I felt sleep overtake me again and I prepared for another vision.

This vision was a set of pictures. The maze, a girl in a flowing white dress and a man. Always the man. He was handsome in a frightening way.

These images flashed again and again until I came to remembering the pictures. Then I started to see details that I had missed. A blond streak in her hair, a new turn in the maze, a wrinkle on his face. Again and again the pictures flashed until a new one arrived. A girl that I vaguely recognized in a stunning white dress, next to a boy who I'd known all my life. Who was the girl and why was she next to Aurther?

The last thing I see before I return to the real world is a date. April 1st.

"I must remember that," I thought as I drifted into the light of an early morning sunrise.

The friendly clatter of pots and pans greeted me as I walked into the kitchen.

"Good morning, Evengaleen." It was the head chef, Mrs. Amber. I always made people refer to me as just my name. I prefer it that way.

"Good morning, Mrs. Amber."

We exchange an early morning chat over a danish and a cup of tea. The sun began to beat down on me, making me hot. I wanted to get away so I excused myself and headed to my tower. When I reached my room I slipped into my riding clothes.

Time to get some answers.

Chapter 2-

A friendly whinny greet me as I walk into the stables. Horses are everywhere but I walked to my favorite stall in the corner.

The whinny sounded again and a beautiful white head popped over the black stall door. She whimpered at me to come closer.

I walked to her and gave her an apple. She took it gratefully and looked up.

"Good girl. Good Princess. Have they been feeding you alright?"

That was my horse. I had watched her being born and I had chosen her. I named her Princess. She was mine. All mine.

I saddled her and put the bridle on. She didn't like the bit so I used a simple rope bridle that I made myself.

My Father would skin me alive if he ever found out but I still used it. It was actually quite safe.

I jumped on and almost laughed at the familiar weight. How good it was to ride again!

I made her trot until we were out of hearing and vision of anyone atop the castle wall. Then I made her stop.

"To Aurther's house, girl. You know the way," was all I got to say. I almost fell of her back as she took off.

We reached the castle wall by mid-morning. The friendly face of the guardsman peered down at me.

"Good morning, Sir," I say politely.

"Good morning, Princess," He shouts. I flinch as the name reaches me, "The prince has been expecting you."

With that his face disappears over the wall. The familiar bang of the drawbridge is a comfort as I recall my strange dreams.

Princess jolts me out of my memory by taking an impatient step forward. I almost lose my balance and fall off, again, but I regained control.

As Princess walks to the stables I try not to think about the visions. Instead I think about Auther. The reason I came here was to find out about my vision. Or was it? I wasn't sure anymore.

I let my mind wander back to the memory of that fateful day when I first saw him......

I had just thrown my favorite green ball in the air. My slippers clicked on the hallway stairs as I chased it. To my dismay, it fell out the window. My heart plummeted.

I heard a slam as the front door was shut. I ran to the side door and flung it open. The sunshine felt wonderful on my pale skin.

I looked around for my ball and saw it flying through the air toward me. I caught it and looked around.

I caught sight of a flash of color from one of the servant’s uniforms and sighed. They always ran away.

“Please come play,” I said in a trembling voice.

To my complete surprise a face popped out from behind one of the grand oak trees.

“OK,” said the boy.

He looked about a year older than me and I was glad. If we were seen he could just say that he found me and was escorting me back to my rooms. I explained as much. I also told him who I was.

I expected some kind of reaction but he just nodded and we began debating what we wanted to play.

To my utter disbelief he wanted to play Frog-in-the-Bucket. A game when a person and another person chase a ball or one another until one of them is caught. I was in disbelief because it’s a game usually only played by royals.

When I inquired about this he just shook his head.

“I watch the royals a lot,” was all he said.

The look on his face said not to press him. I didn’t. We played instead.

We had so much fun! We played Tag and Hide-and-Seek. We played Frog-in-the-Bucket and we climbed trees.

I was surprised. Most people wouldn’t even let me off the ground in fear that I fall and break something. He not only let me but he helped me to the very top branches.

When dinner came (We had played through lunch.) I asked him if he would join us. He refused politely and walked away.

It wasn’t till I was in bed that night thinking about my day that realization dawned and made me smack my forehead. I didn’t even know his name!

Chapter 3

Three days later I saw him again. He was outside in the garden by the pond. This time in royal clothes.
I approached him cautiously.
“Who are you?”
My question made him jump. I guess he hadn’t heard me coming. He turned his blue eyes on me and looked at me questioningly.
I repeated the question. I looked away to avoid his gaze. He was obviously richer than me. He had more power. One false move and he could send me to the gallows.
When he saw what I was doing he quickly stood up. I almost backed away but I remembered my place. In a feeble attempt to be courteous I curtsied and fell flat on my face.
As I got up my face grew very hot. I looked at him to see if he was laughing. He was. I looked down to hide my embarrassment. He surely thought me a fool.
Without meaning too I wondered who he was. I still hadn’t learned his name. I came to the sudden realization that I didn’t care. I turned on my heel and ran.
I ran like I had never run before. I ran back through the garden and the side door. I scared the maid that was coming through the door and I shouted an apology back to her.
I ran until his calls were lost in the sound of my footsteps and beating heart. I ran up all the steps to my tower room and slammed the door. I locked the door and leaned heavily on it. It was then that I realized I was crying.
I threw myself on my bed and cried. I had lost a friend. I had lost the one friend that dared to beat me in a game. I did smile through my tears when I remembered the games.
When I composed myself I got up and crossed to the window. I peered into the gardens. The place where he had been was empty. My breath came out in a whoosh and I realized that I had been holding it in.
I thought about him. About how I still didn’t know his name. I thought about how I wouldn’t see him again. The thought brought another round of tears. As I dissolved into sobs I had the sudden instinct that I should go down to the study. I thought it was to consult Father. I dried my tears
Boy, was I ever wrong.

I stayed in my room for a little while longer to compose myself. I opened the wooden door with a creak and began to descend the stairs. When I reached the grand hall I stopped just shy of going into the room. The door was wide open, but all my instincts told me to stay in the doorway. During the last few weeks I had learned to trust my instincts so I crouched down in the wooden doorway.
Thinking back now, I’m kind of glad I did. When my knees touched the ice cold floor, I heard the distinct sound of voices. I flinched at the cold and listen to Father’s hard, gravely voice mix with a softer, simpler voice. The boy! But why was he in the study?
They both were speaking with equal authority and I almost stood up and ran into the room at the familiarity in which they were speaking. Almost. Instead I gritted my teeth and stifled the impulse. I stuck my head in the room. Father saw me and put a finger to his lips. He wanted me to be quiet and listen. I smiled a wolfish grin and sat back. This was going to be interesting.
“…What did you say that my girl did to you?” Father began.
“I said,” said the boy. He looked annoyed I realized with glee, “that she played with me a few days ago and when she saw me today…. Well,” He looked at Father sheepishly, “she ran away.” His face was sober but his eyes played between fear and hurt.
“And what about you, Evengaleen?” Father asked.
I jumped to my feet as they both turned to me. I brushed some of the dirt off my skirts and unsuccessfully tried not to look like a total idiot. I glared at Father for not giving me any warning. I then to turned to the bewildered royal.
He turned about three different shades of scarlet (my favorite color) and began to bow.
“Don’t.” My voice sounded cold even to me. “I just have one question.” I looked from Father to the boy, who had a look of a cat that really wants to flee but knows there is no way of escape, and back again. I took a very deep breath, turned to the boy, and asked the question that had bothered me for days.
“Who are you?”

Father crossed his arms, but his face betrayed no hints. This was between me and the boy.
“I have many questions. For one… Who are you? Why did you play with me? Why did you lie?” I threw the questions at him like pebbles into a brook but he didn’t blush again.
“I lied,” He said, “because I wanted a friend. I lied because, like you, I was afraid that if I played with anyone who knew who I was, they would let me win out of fear.” He turned away. I still had so many questions but I just repeated on of the earlier ones.
“Who are you?” I asked quietly. I looked around for Father but he seemed to have left the study. “Traitor!” I mumbled.
The boy, who was blushing again, turned back around to face me. He looked me in the eye and blushed harder.
“My name,” He said quietly, “is Prince Aurther.”
The look on my face must have told all, because the next minute was silent. I contemplated my feelings as ‘Aurther’ looked on. I was feeling relief, hurt, and happiness all at the same time. Relief because I knew who he was, hurt that he hadn’t told me sooner and happiness because I would finally have someone to play with!
He-Aurther smiled at me. He took my hand and we have been friends ever since.

Cold hands around my waist jolted me from my memory. I swallowed the yelp that had formed in my throat when I saw who it was.

Chapter 4

He looked handsome as always, but I rarely saw him these days. His parents were obsessed with marrying him off. They have had four balls in the last three weeks. They invited me to all of them. I always had to go because Aurther begs me to and I ended up being his distraction all night.
Letting him lift me off Princess, I took a closer look. I was surprised with what I saw. He looked tired. He had dark circles under his usually clear blue eyes. Today, all I saw was a stormy grey. Under further inspection I realized that his golden hair was almost a shadow of it’s former self. There was mud on one of his cheeks and his skin was unusually pale. Something was going on. I was going to pry it out of him as soon as we were alone.
He helped me to the ground and I hugged him. Before I could whisper a ‘What’s wrong?’ in his ear, he whispered in mine.
‘We need to talk. Meet me in the study in five minutes.’ His look told me that it was urgent so I took off toward the gardens.

After almost ten minutes of dodging maids or adults that would be nosy and try to find out where I was going, leaping hedges, and hiding behind walls, I finally made it to the study.
I opened the door and peered inside. The desk in the left corner and the chairs in the right were empty. I was starting to think that Aurther had given up on me when I looked to the back of the room. The bookcase, which took up most of the back wall, was still there but a chair had been pushed in front of it. Aurther smirked at me and started to say something.
Before he could even get a word out I had swept silently into the room, shut the door behind me, walked over to where Aurther was sitting, and clamped a hand over his mouth.
I looked into his startled eyes, leaned over, and whispered in his ear.
“Make a smart remark. I dare you.”
His eyes got really wide and he nodded. I removed my hand and started to giggle. Aurther eventually started giggling too and we fell into a heap on the floor.
Almost ten minutes later, when we were finally able to compose ourselves, I got up and pulled him up. He sat down as I picked up a chair from the front of the room. I walked back and set it down next to Aurther. I looked at him and asked the question.
“What’s wrong?”
Aurther cursed and turned to look at me. His face darkened.
“Is it that obvious?” He lowered his voice. I could barely hear him.
I nodded and he cursed again. I could see his panic and I put a hand on his arm. He looked at me and smiled. He began to tell his story.
“Last night, I had a dream…A vision,” He looked at me. He had known about me almost three years now. I had actually saved his life from a falling brick. I had a vision of the brick falling and I saw it hit someone. I couldn’t tell whom. When I woke up I went to the place that I saw it fall and stood guard. Aurther wandered over and asked what I was doing. I swore him to secrecy and told him about my visions.
Around noon, I felt a tingling sensation and I saw Aurther wander over a little too far to the left. I had a split second to react. I went with my instincts. I pushed him out of the way and the brick fell on my arm. I was left with a broken arm and an even stronger bond with Aurther.
“Anyway,” He said, “I was at a ball and I saw you wander out the side door. I followed you out and saw you go into the maze.” He looked at me for a response. He saw me shiver but he didn’t ask. Instead he continued. “I followed you and saw a hedge disappear. You went through and the hedge closed back up. I heard a scream and looked through an opening in the hedge. I saw you on the ground…bleeding.” He paused here.
I thought I saw a look of fear but it was quickly stifled. “You looked at me and screamed that it was a trap. I saw you do something and the hedge disappeared. I ran through and I knelt by you. You stared at something over my shoulder, too terrified to even scream.” He stopped and shook his head. “I drew my sword and turned around. That’s when it ended.”
He looked at me with genuine worry and I almost threw up. My vision came back with deathly force, almost knocking me out of my chair.
I was about to tell him about my vision and how scary the similarities were when I was actually knocked to the ground by a wall of white. My legs went numb and with my last bit of strength I whispered one word to Aurther. “Help.” It was right after that when my world went dark and the vision began.

I hit the ground with a sickening thud, but I don’t think the people in the pavilion noticed. I stood up and brushed myself off. I realized that I was in our garden, but it wasn’t the same. The stables were a brighter shade of red and the lake was clearer. In front of the lake was the pavilion, but instead of a sickly shade of grey, it was a bright white. There was ivy climbing up the left outside wall and roses on the right.
I walked to an opening in the pavilion. It looked beautiful. The inside was a pure white and there were white tables and chairs to match. When I looked around I notice a boy and a girl having afternoon tea. The girl was about 15 and she had fiery red hair. It curled so nicely that I was immediately jealous. He skin was exactly my shade and it puzzled me.
The boy, about a year older than the girl, with blond hair (also curly) and a sunny complexion was leaning over the teapot as though he was looking inside it.
It took about 3 seconds for me to realize that the people in the chair were talking. I finally started to pay attention and caught the boy looking at the roses.
“You have to tell him.” The boy said. He didn’t turn to look at her but just kept staring at the teapot.
“He loves you and doesn’t need to be led on.”
“I know,” she said. I couldn’t help but notice how much her voice sounded like mine. My hand rose to my throat, “I will deny him tonight. In the gardens.”
The boy sat up to look at her with his startlingly blue eyes. He stared daggers at her and I shivered.
“I don’t like that idea, Alice. I’m worried that he’ll…” He paused with a pained look on his face.
Alice stood up and walked over to him. She sat in the chair next to him and took his hand.
“That,” she stopped and sighed. She took a deep breath and continued, “he’ll hurt me again?” It was then that I realized that she was covered in bruises. I almost fell to the ground but I stayed upright.
The boy looked down and back up again as if he couldn’t decide how to answer.
“August,” she took his face in her hands and tilted his gaze to meet hers, “He will never hurt me again. I love you. Don’t doubt that.”
This time I did fall to the ground and saw a figure next to me. I almost screamed when I saw his face. He was from my vision! He was laughing silently. I had a sudden realization. That girl, Alice, was the girl from my vision. The one who died. He had killed her. I did scream then and I was sucked back into the present. A time without murder. Or so I thought.

I awoke with a searing pain in my head. My hand flew up to try to dim the pain and I remembered where I was. I opened one eye to look for Aurther. I didn’t have to.
He was kneeling on the floor next to me, his face just inches from mine. I debated spitting on him but I chose against it. I needed help. I opened my mouth to talk to him but made another decision. I pulled him onto the cold floor next to me as I debated how to tell him. As Aurther shivered I came to a decision. I leaned in closer.
I flashed a wolfish grin and whispered in his ear.
“Would you like to come to dinner? We could talk later.”
I gave him a meaningful look and stood up. I shook myself off and put down a hand to help Aurther up. He took it and I pulled him up. We brushed each other off and began to walk to the throne room in search of his parents.

About 10 minutes, two maids, and some very wrong advice later, we were outside the King’s study. We were about to commit the most volatile act known to man. We were going to ask for Aurther’s freedom for one night.
Aurther glanced over at me with an expression like that of a deer in the headlights. I almost burst out giggling and had to look away and cover my mouth with my hand. When I looked back, I started the process all over again.
I finally composed myself and turned to him. A stern expression on my face, or an expression that I thought was stern, put my hand on my hip, and said, “You know you don’t have to come in there with me.”
His expression turned to one of horror. I noticed that his eyes were back to there regular blue.
“I can’t go on my merry way knowing that I sent you in there to face them! Alone!”
I couldn’t help it. I burst out laughing, When he started laughing, I pushed open the door and walked inside, dragging Aurther behind me.
The King and Queen looked up from there books and almost looked back down when they saw me. The Queen was blessed with long, brown haired, brown eyes, and a charming smile. What she wasn’t blessed with was a perfect nose. I will describe it, to be kind, as long and narrow.
The King was who Aurther took after. The same features, the same hair, and even the same taste in clothes. They were both wearing a light purple satin shirt and breaches. The Queen was wearing a dark purple gown in comparison and she looked stunning.
I looked down at my own black gown and tried not to be jealous. Hearing the Queen stand, I looked up and saw Aurther blush when his mother wrapped him in a hug and whispered in his ear. His facial expression changed to stunned and I made a mental note to ask the Queen what she had said to him.
I smiled and walked up to Aurther. I wrapped him in a hug and gave him a look that said, “Are you asking or am I?” The look on his face gave me the answer.
I released Aurther and walked over to the Queen. I took her hand and looked at her pleadingly. Aurther walked to the back and sat down next to his father as I walked her to the front of the room and asked her.
“Would you mind if I borrowed Aurther tonight? I would really be obliged if he could come.”
She looked at me with complete love and I knew the answer. “Yes!” She said, and smiled.

Twenty minutes later, we were riding on our way back to the castle. I was on Princess and Aurther was riding his black, three year old mare suspiciously named Evy. While they talked back and forth I looked at Aurther. He chose that moment to look over at me. He opened his mouth and I never, to this day, expected his next words.
“How are you getting out of this one?” he asked.
“What?”
“Your father doesn’t know that I’m coming does he?”
I cursed and was almost knocked off Princess as she stepped in a ditch. She gave a whinny of concern. As I started sliding to one side Aurther galloped over and pulled me back up. My face was just inches from his and I was overwhelmed with feelings that confused me. I sat up and brushed a lock of black hair from my face.
I looked at Aurther and began to form a plan. I grinned mischievously and Aurther sighed.
“I don’t like that look. Whenever you get that look, someone ends up in trouble.”
“Don’t worry,” I said. “I have a plan. Race ya!”
I grinned at him. We both let our horses go at the same time and the wind screamed in my ears as we raced toward the castle.
