| Hello everyone, So from what I can tell is that in this group I'm an old man. My daughter has heard good reviews about this series. My daughter is turning 13 next month. She love to read and has always loved monsters and vampire mysteries fantasy. She really wants to read this series. But.....
Can anyone tell me what an appropriate age to start reading HON would be. I wont letter her read the Twilight series heard it was more of an adult read.
I was already to buy all 6 box for he Xmas present. But the casher (wal-mart) says it a great book very steamy. So I posed this question to her. She wasn't to sure she thought there were only one scene that might not be good for a 12 year old. So I ask "is it a love scene"?
Cashier says its more of a sex scene!
So I'm holding of right now. I would like to hear from everyone. To hear the authors opinion would be really cool!
Please don't be to hard on me for being a protective dad. I'm tiring to keep an open mind that's why I'm asking the fans (you) what you think. Please give me your honest and unbiased option.

| I, personally, don't think it's appropriate for a 12/13 year old, but I know there's many readers of that age on this forum that love the series. P.C. Cast has said before in an interview (I'll try and find it for you) that she thinks the age would be about 14+. If you wouldn't let her read Twilight, then I don't think you should let her read this. I think HoN is a bit more mature than Twilight. In the first book, there's a blowjob scene (I thought it was gross and I'm 19.) and there's also a sex scene in Book 3. Throughout the series, there's talk of sex (not bad kind of talk) but call it making out with a little extra commentary. There's also cussing, but the main character doesn't cuss that much. If your daughter's mature enough, then I think she'd be okay because there's more to the series than that. But if she is like me when I was that age (don't even want to talk about sex or boyfriends or anything like that), then I would wait until she's a bit older. And I admire you for being interested in what your daughter reads. I think that's great!
Some other series to consider that aren't as mature as HoN: The Hunger Games & Catching Fire (Two books in a Trilogy. They're amazing, but they're not about vampires). The Immortals Series by Alyson Noel (Not vampires, but very cool immortals) The Mortal Instruments (ShadowHunters and a bit of vampires) The Darkest Powers Series (Supernatural stuff, but no vampires)
Hope this helps! |

| Here's from PC's blog (It's a bit of a different answer, but it's what she thinks):
Question: I'm a parent/step-parent/aunt/uncle/grandma, etc., of a twelve year old (you can really insert any age from ten to fifteen or so here), and my child wants to read your series. Could you please tell me if it's appropriate for his/her age?
P.C.'s answer: First, this question really makes me crazy. As a long time teacher, from a family of teachers, perhaps I'm jaded, but I DON'T UNDERSTAND NOT READING WHAT YOUR KID IS READING, TOO! As a mom, I don't understand asking someone else what's appropriate for your child. So my short answer is: read the books yourself (not just mine, any author's books) and decide whether or not your child is mature enough to read them. I can't possibly know that. The longer answer is: Kristin and I had in mind kids sixteen years old on up when we began writing the series, and that still holds true. |

| My 13 year old sister read and is obsessed with Twilight. My mother read it before her and i read it with her too. There were some parts that were iffy but overall it wasn't terrible. I agree that HoN is not appropriate for anyone under like 15 due to some of the scenes. It even shocked me at first and I will not allow my sister to read them. I don't have any suggestions but I would agree with Evie about the suggestions she has given since she knows books |

| Whether the story is better is an opinion ^^^ But, whether twilight is more mature than HoN or vise verse, HoN is definitely for the more mature age group. |

| I'm a little older than most of the members here and even I was shocked buy the scene in Marked between Aphrodite and Erik. If I were a parent I probably wouldn't let my 13 year old read this. And I agree with Ms Cast about reading what your children read. If my mom had any idea of some of the books I've read she'd probably have a stroke. |

| I have to agree with P.C Cast, you should definitely be the judge of what your kids read by reading the books first. That's how it started when I was younger. My mom would read the book and then determine if I should read it. Now its the other way around O.o My mom doesn't read as much as she used to anymore and well she seems to like my taste of books better than her own. What I was going to try to say but got sidetracked on my own story is that reading a book before your kid and then talking over the book (scenes you think may not be appropriate) with them, helps set the standard of books that your kid may choose to read in the future. It helps when your child knows how you feel about them reading certain topics! | |

| I agree with others about House of Night being generally more mature than Twilight, but every parent has to be his/her own judge. Really, if a young person has read the Breaking Dawn as well, I think that is just as mature as the HoN series. So if you think Breaking Dawn was acceptable, then HoN should be fine. Both stories are different and fantastic! | |

| I read Marked when I was a hmmm *thinks* freshman & I'm a junior now so I was about.....*thinks again* 14 & when I read it I didnt really get the blow job scene I was just like huh? so maybe ur daughter wont even realize whats going on and for Twilight its not very sexual at all the only sex scene is in the last one and it wasnt discriptive at all...it didnt even talk about it. it was like oh I woke up & we did it so I dont think u have 2 worry that much about twilight but HoN is a bit mature...u might want to wait a little bit.... | |

| I am 13 and I read the HoN series. My aunt gave me the series when I went to visit her. She had read it so I figured I would try it. It's great however I do agree with many of these other fans. There is a blow job scence, a sex scence, and talk of sex and that kind of stuff. I definetly dont blame you for being a protective dad though! I think its better that you ask before buying it and realizing that your daughter isnt ready to read it. I personally think that it is up to you though. I hope that all of the fans opinions help you make the right decision. | |

| I read HoN at 12- a figured it was a bit to young to read it, but the story's just so good! The is a scene in Marked, but that's the worst it gets, i think. I figured to just focus on the actual story and anyways, i'm gonna find out someday.
I depends- you know your daughter, we don't.
Make the choice you think you should
Go you, Sir!! | |

| Well, I am 15 about to be 16 in a few weeks and I started reading the series not long before the second book was released and I think that I was in 7th or 8th grade, so I think it's appropriate if you think that your daughter is mature enough to the handle it. I'm going to be blunt and tell you that there are definitely parts that get really mature and I have always been mature for my age ( I hope you don't take that the wrong way, I'm not trying to be stuck up, I'm just being honest) so at that age I was able to handle it, but I know people that probably should wait until they are about 17 or 18 to read them if they want to. So, as many of the previous users have said, it depends on if you think your child is mature enough for it, but I would strongly recommend taking Ms. Cast's advice and reading the books yourself before you make your final decision. | |

| I'd like to say some things... I'm thirteen, and started to read the House of Night series when I was twelve, I bought the series for myself. I'm quite mature for my age, and my grandma doesn't mind what I read. I'm not saying she doesn't care, she just knows that I can handle stuff like that. She read them after me and really enjoyed them, she reads just about every book that I do, and she's not breathing down my neck for them, I give them to her to read. It's all about what you think your child will understand and be mature enough to handle. I think it's ignorant to assume that every thirteen year old child has the exact same knowledge base and maturity level, we're not that similar. We can be just as smart and knowledgeable as you, just because we're a certain age doesn't mean you should just assume that all of us won't understand or be able to handle certain subject matters. I believe that's stereotyping.
Basically, if she is a knowledgeable, mature girl, she would be able to handle it. You can't lock this stuff away forever, give your child room to grow. | |

| This books perfect for a 12/13 year old. I mean we can relate to the majority of things that go on in the series and if not we understand it at the least.... there is a sex scene in the 2nd book im 13 and I started reading the books last year. so this is my opinion | |
