from public to private (x)

I looked at him. Then at the car, then back at him. "Can I at least take you home first?" i called to him. "please?"

"Sure. I live about 10 miles that way," I pointed up the road.

I nodded and got in. I was a bit scared to turn this thing on. I didn't want to ruin her. I just stared at the driving wheel. I looked at him. "Uh, thank you. For the car. I really can't accept this those." I finally turned her on and started to drive. "my family wouldn't let me keep it..." i said.

"I'm not giving you or your family a choice in the matter. If need be I'll talk to them myself." I stated plainly.

I looked at him. "Good luck with that..." i said.

"Well, if talking doesn't work, threats will. I could easily buy the land. You will keep this car and the money." I always got what I wanted.

I looked at him. "No." I laughed a bit. i stopped. "i don't mind you coming over. In fact my mother will probably make you stay for dinner, but i was saying good luck for a different reason."

"And what's the reason?" I inquired.

I stopped the car. "First, before i tell you the reason why, you have to agree that if you talk to my mother you will stay for dinner. Culturally its an insult not to stay if you are invited to stay for food."

"Fine. Now tell me."

"my mother doesn't speak english." I said driving off to my house. "I am going to have to translate for you. You are going to have to bare with us." I said. "and my older brother might either like you or hate you. not sure yet. Either way they are going to assume you are my new first boyfriend."

"I can only be new or first. Which is it?" I raised an eyebrow.

"First," I admitted. "Anyway" i tried to change the subject. "That's why you would have a hard time talking to my parents about it. Treats or no. My father works nights and my mother doesn't speak a lick on english. She has tried learning but the language is hard for her." I explained hoping that this would make him forget that i was a loser. We finally got to the house. It was small, the paint on the blue house was chipping, there was most of the roof, the screen door had no screen.... I was embarrassed. I parked the car behind a huge push in my yard so no one would see it. I grabbed my bag and looked at him. "ready?"

I walked up the door. "Always."

I took a deep breath and unlocked the door. "mama!" i called out. "esta aqi?" I let him in. My room was the living room. I put my backpack on the couch. my 4 older brothers looking at me and my white friend. I heard my mother call out. My eldest brother made a racist comment in spanish. "baboso, shut up." i glared. My brothers laughed. "Come on my mom is in the kitchen..." i said. The smell of chicos tacos fill the whole house. It made my mouth water. "mama? nesecito habla" my mother looked at me and kissed my lips like my mother always did then looked at leon. She had a grin on her face. I sighed. She grabbed his face and kissed him too. "muy guapo!" she cried out. "mama!"

"Very good looking eh?" I laughed.

I blushed. "Mama. esto mi AMIGO Leon." I emphasized the friend part. she patted my cheek like i was in denial. I tried to talk to her about the car but she shut up me. she even called me a tonta. which was silly girl in spanish. My mother grabbed him and sat him at the table and grabbed me and gave me some corn tortilla's. and a huge bowl of ground beef. she has most of the meal done, but now that he was here she was going to make a fiesta. I started to roll up the food. My mother couldn't stop looking at me and then at him. "Leon, stay dinner?" My mother tried saying leon will you please stay for dinner in english.

"Si madame. Gracias." I replied.

I giggled. "Senora." I smiled. "She's married and she doesn't know what madame is. That's french." I rolled up more tacos. That's when i realized... I ask my mother where she go the money for the food. "I got it," my father came into the house. I looked at him. "Apa... i didn't know you were-"

"who's this and why did work call in saying that you could take the day off?" he intereuppted.

"This is my friend Leon and i am not sure. I thought i had to work the extra shift tonight.." i answered him. my father was a very big man. A teddy bear for me sometimes... but a grizzly bear for everyone. He sat at the table and looked at Leon. "Why is he hear." I started to talk to him in spanish to not be rude and again my mother shut me up and my father up. "So why are you here?" He asked leon. "Im her father. Mr. Hernandez to you."

"I'm here because I was invited. And because I gave your daughter a gift today which she told me you would refuse to let her have. And I'm her to tell you that you have no choice in the matter." I didn't like this guy so much.

I slapped my face against my palm. He was going to get shot. That is when my nosey brothers came in. "What kinda a gift?" "Where is it?" they started to bombarded with questions and me too. one of my brother explained to my mother. My father had no reaction yet. "Where is it?" He asked me. "Behind the bushes..." suddenly everyone ran outside. even my mother. My father walked along side with me holding my hand. He saw the car. "We can not accept this unless you tell us what you want with my daughter and still for dinner." He said. He liked Leon. Great. I went back into the kitchen alone and started to warm of the liquid part of dinner. Everyone came back in after that...

"There's nothing I want from her. You're family has had many misfortunes. Its only right to help those in need. And I don't like it when people try to hurt girls. So I protected her." Maybe he wasn't so bad.

My brothers laughed hard now. "She doesn't need protecting!" My father sent them away. I watched my father. "What did you protect her from?" He asked. "We send her to private school to protect her and you're telling me that you had to protect her." Again i heard my brothers laugh. My mother and i danced around each other starting to make all 8 bowls.

"Just because it's a private school school doesn't mean everyone is so nice there. I had to protect her from three guys that were going to hurt her. They weren't stupid enough to mess with me though." I looked him dead in the eyes.
